In July 2010, First Lady Michelle Obama designated the City of Alameda a Preserve America Community, making it one of a select group of communities nationwide. The city was also cited as one of the "100 Best Communities for Young People" (2010) by America's Promise Alliance, founded by General Colin Powell.
